Renovating NBS

Do you like winning awards, traveling all over the country, networking, and participating in productions? If you said yes to any of those questions, then the National Broadcasting Society is for you.

NBS needs new ideas, fresh faces, and a good polishing. This is your chance to become an important part for the new beginning of this organization.

Once upon a time, UC’s chapter of NBS was very active and won many awards. They won model chapter in 1996 and 2004, most improved chapter of the year 2003-2004, and chapter of the year 2004-2005. They won a total of 26 competition awards, including 6 grand prizes.

In the recent years, however, UC’s chapter of NBS has been less active. Officers of NBS, including Amy Wallace, Jessica Dennis, JT Rooney, Mike Simpson, Joey Dunn and Brendan Jeffrey, realize this and are ready to make some changes. The officers held a meeting to discuss what NBS should look like for its students. Here’s what they came up with:

  • NBS will be is a link between the other E-Media related student organizations, including UCAST, BearCast, and Meisa.

  • NBS will also serve as a resource center for students to get any questions answered.

  • NBS will serve as way for students to showcase their work on a national level by attending annual conventions.

  • NBS will also participate in film challenges, and host guest lectures from local professionals.

Every year NBS goes to the National Convention, which is hosted in a different city each year. This year it was hosted in New York City and in 2008 in Los Angeles. At the convention you have a chance to compete for national awards, network with professionals, and even tour the city. In addition to the convention, NBS participates in productions here on campus.

NBS officers hold daily office hours, allowing students to seek out information.

Most chapter members are E-Media majors, but NBS is open to all UC students. Journalism and communications majors would find NBS activities and competitions worthwhile.
