Featured class: Business Minor

Most E-Media majors grow more and more anxious as graduation approaches. It’s hard to know if you’re ready to compete for a job in the E-Media field.

Because of this competition, many students look for something to give them an edge and to make them stand out. A business minor might be just the thing to give you that edge.

“As an Electronic Media major, I feel it is crucial to have proper business experience,” states E-Media junior Luke Curran. “Business experience drastically increases a student’s possibility for a smooth integration into this perpetually evolving field."

It’s also easier to earn than you would think.

Every E-Media major is required to take 17 of the 35 credit hours needed to earn a business minor. This comes out to only adding one additional quarter onto your college career. Which means less money for a more impressive resume.

E-Media senior Dustin Muncy is pursuing a business minor because he figures, “with the job market and economy how it is, I thought that having something more general might be beneficial in me getting in a job after college, even if it's not related to the electronic media field right away.”

To earn a business minor all you have to do is set up an appointment with the business minor advisor Carol Prues. She’ll tell you about the six foundation courses followed by two upper-level courses.

“Sometimes the classes become extremely challenging,” says E-Media senior Sonya Mueller, “but many, like Marketing and Legal Environment of Business, are easily applicable to a career in electronic media, so that makes the effort worth it.”

All business minors must maintain a 2.0 GPA in all of the classes towards the minor. Two quarters prior to your graduation date you need to meet again with Prues. This will ensure you’ve met the requirements and that you’ll be rewarded the minor when you graduate.

Students are urged to become well rounded by educating themselves in more than just one specific area. A business minor will help give E-Media students a better understanding of the business world before they enter the media field.
