Featured Class: History of E-Media

A brief look into the history of electronic media can offer students the insight to foresee into the future of rapidly evolving technologies. Many lessons can be learned from our past.
All incoming freshman will get the chance to study how far the technologies of the present have come. It is one of the only big lecture courses taken in the Electronic Media Division.
Adjunct instructor Steve Oldfield leads the class through a journey of how our present technologies have come about, and how different media outlets affected the general public.
Presentations about electronic media advancements are a requirement for the course. The presentations can be related to any of the following,
- Electronic media advances
- Major events captured with electronic media
- How media shaped reactions to historic events
Students will be able to make their presentations with full multi-media support wiith their new Mac laptops. Student will have a lot of creative control on how they will format their presentations. Teams of students work on each project so they can divide the workload and produce a higher quality presentation.
The midterm and final are compiled of multiple-choice questions that are written and submitted from the students themselves. Mr. Oldfield believes this offers better study habits, and is reflected by more than 15% of the class scoring an A in the course, while many others scored high B’s.
Class attendance is important in this course, with points being deducted for failure to attend. However with that in mind, Mr. Oldfield keeps the classes interesting with special presentations Last year featured a guest speaker from Channel 19.
Mr. Oldfield looks forward to introducing the entire incoming class into the Electronic Media Division for the fall of 2009 quarter.
