California Internship: Sarah Craig

This winter many E-Media students tried to to stay warm and keep up in school at the University of Cincinnati. But E-Media senior Sarah Craig was sunning herself in Los Angeles, California.
Sarah spent the winter quarter interning at the production company Reveille. That’s the same company that does work for NBC’s The Office, Ugly Betty, 30 Rock and many other projects.
She was selected for this NBCUniversal internship where she’s learning about the law, international, unscripted, and scripted aspects of Reveille. All she did was apply for the internship online and NBCUniversal’s Human Resources connected her with Reveille.
Sarah is on what is called a “rotational internship.” This keeps her experiencing different divisions of the company each day. So far she’s been learning about researching and composing rating reports, unscripted show development, international content distribution, and she’s even been a production assistant for one of their television shows.
After Sarah explained all she had been learning she added, “I can’t predict what else I will be learning… it’s a VERY fast paced environment. They truly make you part of the team at Reveille, this isn’t a “pour the coffee” internship.”
Sarah has landed a great opportunity to learn in a diverse environment outside of Cincinnati. But she’s realizing there are also some difficult aspects to her experience…discovering the real world.
“In college we sign up for classes when we want, we eat when we want, sleep and wake up when we want,” she says, “but in this business you truly are on everyone else’s schedule…you have to climb the ladder to have your own.”
Sarah is working eight-hour days four to five times a week. Sarah was lucky enough to have a place to stay with her dad south of Los Angeles. She commutes two hours every morning and evening because as she says, “gas money is cheaper then rent!”
Sarah is definitely putting in her time but there is no doubt she will be getting a lot out of her experience this quarter.
