Dr. John Owens
Dr. John Owens is the professor behind our internet radio operation, Bearcast. Besides radio, his teaching interests include the business aspects of the media field.
He teaches Bearcast, Digital Audio Production, Survey of E-Media Advertising, E-Media Sales, and E-Media Programming. He won CCM’s Ernest N. Glover Outstanding Teaching Award in 2001.
Dr. Owens, shown above with his wife Jeana and son Xavier, is developing his expertise in new media, especially podcasting, and is researching impact of new media on advertising.
He has made presentations to the Broadcast Education Association (BEA), the Speech Communication Association and the National Association of College Broadcasters. He has published articles in the Journal of Sport and Social Issues and in Government Video Magazine. His research on internet radio was recognized twice by the BEA. In 1998, Dr. Owens was a National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) Conference Fellow and he was awarded a NATPE grant in 2001.
Prior to coming to UC in 1999, Dr. Owens worked in AM and FM radio, taught at Western Carolina University, and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Alabama. His undergraduate degree is from the University of Kentucky.

The Future of Radio

On February 2nd, Tim Westergren, founder of Pandora radio, came to the
E-Media Division to talk about Pandora and the future of radio. Pandora
is an online radio service that plays musically similar songs to
artists that the user already enjoys. Dr. John Owens commented on the service and the current state of the
radio industry.
