Why I'm Here: Summer 2008
Simón Sotelo, sophomore I came to UC because I have always loved the city I was raised in. The E-Media program was especially exciting because it offers a strong liberal arts component and aims to increase versatility. Not only is this essential in today’s market, it promotes well-rounded, educated individuals, not just technicians. I’ve enjoyed everything from business classes to Judaic studies. I love the range of courses offered at a university of this size. The urban campus provides an interesting mix of people from all backgrounds. I’ve seen a lot of people broaden their horizons because of all the people they’ve met at UC. The Munich study-abroad program is amazing and I can’t wait to take part in it.

Media was always a big part of my life and I knew I wanted to take part in it in some way when I went to college. I grew up in a small town, Martinsburg, West Virginia and knew I had to go to a big city to get the kind of experience I wanted. When I discovered that the E-Media Division allows students to gain experience in every aspect of the media profession, I knew this was the place for me. I knew a broad experience would be important to me on my path to becoming a television producer. E-Media has given me opportunities to try everything, including audio mixing, video editing and on camera work. I know I’ll have the skills to be an effective intern next year and then succeed at whatever media career I enter upon graduation.

I have always been a fan of UC but I didn’t know it had a program so closely related to the field I want to pursue. I’ve known since I was in the 7th grade that I wanted to make movies. I was considering going out of state to college until I realized UC had just the program I wanted. In addition to teaching me production skills that will help me in a film career, I’m getting a broad education which means I have many new areas of interest. I can now speak German well enough to carry on a conversation. I took up DJ’ing with Bearcast my freshman year and won an award. In E-Media there is a sense of community among the students and a creative drive that doesn’t allow obstacles to slow us down. I’m working to build a reel so I can apply to graduate programs in film. In the future I hope to work for a studio in a position that will allow me to use my creativity.

Electronic Media has challenged me to try new things that I never thought I would in college. Last summer, I joined 15 other E-Media students in our Munich Summer Curriculum. The summer in Europe helped me gain a perspective of how business is run around the world. At UC, I enrolled in the honors program which offers me challenging classes that aren’t available to the general student body. These included Border Crossings: International Film and Philosophy of Ethics. This summer (2008) E-Media gave me the chance to intern in New York as a production assistant on As the World Turns. I can’t believe my time at UC is almost over and I’m not sure where I will be headed. But if I had my dream job, I would be media director for a large non-profit organization or travel around the world as a host for the Travel Channel.
